Simple batch settling

Postby SunWizard » Wed Mar 05, 2008 3:12 pm

I have used a simple unheated system that works but takes a long time, a week to several months depending on your temps and VO type and dirtyness. Fill a 55 gallon barrel, seal it, let settle for as long as you like. Pump your dewatered VO starting from the top down with a floating pickup tube, through a 5 micron filter. Don't use the bottom 6" or any level you choose depending on amount of sludge, keep that in the barrel for the next batch.

You can also do batch settling in an old electric hot water heater which speeds up the process. You need to rewire it so the top element isn't used, and run the lower element at 110v instead of 220v, here are instructions:

And as with any system, do a hot pan test from the lowest VO you use to determine if you got the water out.
