1987 Mercedes 300TD Wagon

Postby SunWizard » Tue Jul 29, 2008 2:21 pm

I just got this car, a 1987 Mercedes 300TD Wagon. Its the last year they had a diesel wagon and only 2600 were imported to the US. I am amazed at the advances over my 1981, it has huge power, great handling, 30mpg, so smooth and quiet you can hardly tell its a diesel. Even at 80mph, plenty of acceleration. Its the most fun to drive car I have ever driven. Previous owner updated the headlights to the Euro style which makes it look like a much newer model. Everything works, not a speck of rust, hard to tell it has 243k miles. It still has the tough fully mechanical Bosch injection, so will be converted to 2 tank VO soon.

Its a 3.0 liter 6 cylinder, 603.96 engine. They did major redesign of the 617 to create the 603 engine, to optimize the power, and make it quieter. They made this engine up until 95 but they are rare in all models. They sold no diesels in the US 88-89 due to CA passing stricter emissions laws. Then people quit buying diesels as much since the memory of the "gas crisis" was about gone by 87, and Mercedes prices went too high. This one was $37,000 when it was new. They sold 10-40x as many diesels each year in the early 80's.

I bought a new Honda Civic that same year (1987) for around $8k. It long ago went to the crusher, while this Mercedes still drives like new.

That's what I thought. Hopefully this is one with the later generataion head. If I recall right the 603 had a stretch of years with head problems.

It was only 87 that had head cracking problems, then they beefed up the head. Mine is the original, still working OK. I may get a later head if I can find one when its time for a valve job someday. But its not smoking much yet.

nice. I believe that those had galvanized body panels, too....
that is one reason I keep on thinking about dropping a 617 into a early 90's volvo wagon.... they are easy to find around here(volvo wagons cheeep)

congrats...

Yes they do, thats probably why there's not a speck of rust anywhere on it even though its 22 years old.
