Coolant hose ID on a 300D?

Postby hheynow » Sun Sep 07, 2008 9:20 am

I'm torn whether to use a 5/8" ID hose for my coolant loop or reduce down to 3/8". Each has it's advantages. The 5/8" will circulate more coolant but since I will slip the hoses inside cheepo rubber hose for insulation and abrasion resistance the weight and bulk of these hoses is a concern since I'm running them under the chassis. My coolant heated filter head has 5/8" ports, but reducing them to 3/8" is easy. The advantage to 3/8" is a lighter and smaller hose. My Powerstroke has a 3/8" ID coolant hose loop and it heats just fine.

How will using reducing tees at the heater core hoses 5/8-5/8-3/8 affect the functioning of the water pump? Will it work harder than using 5/8-5/8-5/8 tees?

300D have low coolant circulation, thats why they have an added electric pump to circulate through the heater core. It would be interesting to test the amount of flow that electric pump can do through each size and length of hose. And also to see how much flow you get without the electric heater pump.
