Cummins dies shortly after starting

Postby harrisonm3 » Sat Dec 27, 2008 7:51 pm

Converted 97 12 valve cummins.

Now the truck starts fine but shortly after it struggles and dies.

Runs for a good 10 seconds.

Any thoughts?
Have an awesome day

Air leak. What did you do to get the air out of all the lines? Do you have a fuel pressure guage? We need lots more details to give better ideas. Such as: did it ever work after conversion for more than 10 secs? Plumbing?

The truck will run fine after starting it for the second time.

I bled the system by pressurizing the tank(s) and priming the lift pump.

Haven't installed the fuel pressure gauge yet.

Both sides are vacuum to the lift pump.

Where would it suck air in that it would run for 10-20 seconds before the air gets to the injectors?

Even more indication of an air leak, by far the most common problem.

This makes air leaks even more a problem.

Anyplace before the IP. Put a clear inline filter and move it around until you see no more air, then you know where its from. The only trick is that its probably leaking while it sits, so it will take many days of moving to find the leak.
