Got a Benz last night!

Postby tubular031 » Wed Jun 17, 2009 7:18 am

It’s an 82 300 SD. Drives nice 200k on the clock but needs a few little things fixed. The ac does not work. The guy gave me a reman compressor that he was going to install but never got to it.

The cruise control does not work and I noticed this morning there were a few drips of oil under it. hmmm going to have to crawl under there and see if I can figure out how to fix that.

A few questions-
-What oil (motor oil) is good for these things? RotellaT like my truck?
-Where is a good forum for these older diesel benz cars (if any)
-What other maintenance things should be done on these? (valves, timing belts and the like)
-Its a mechanical injection right? So what is needed to crank this thing up like those 12v Cummins motors
-And for sun - What fuel hose did you use on your benz and truck? where did you get it from?

I really like the look of this car.

Nice paint job on the benz

odds are compressor is only one thing in a chain of the issues wrong with the AC. Most benz of that era have non working AC.

check out Mercedesshop.com diesel forum

You got a nice looking one, congratulations. AC often is bad on those.

Very common problem, it was a poor design. I put an Audiovox aftermarket cruise in mine for about $80.
A few questions-

Yes.
-Where is a good forum for these older diesel benz cars (if any)

Adjust the valves. No timing belt, its a nice double chain and you can check the stretch while in doing the valves. Change the tranny fluid and filter, change the rear end oil.
-Its a mechanical injection right? So what is needed to crank this thing up like those 12v Cummins motors

Yes. See the mercedes forum I linked. Adjusting the ALDA (boost limiter) is the easiest way to more power. I haven't seen anyplace that sells mercedes fuel plates like works on the cummins IP.
-And for sun - What fuel hose did you use on your benz and truck? where did you get it from?

SAE 30R7 hose (50psi) from my local autozone and from www.mcmaster.com

As usual, thanks SUN!!

What do you suggest for the oil in the rear end?

Where did you get the cruise box from?

SAE 90W gear oil unless its a limited slip which is very rare.
Where did you get the cruise box from?

www.ebay.com
mine is a CCS-100.

There are directions on using them with your existing cruise stalk at those forums. This is much nicer than the little box with buttons that comes with it.

Hey sun-
on your benz with the 80/20 blend, how cold do you run it that way? How many miles do you have on it running the 80/20 blend?

Anyone know what this is? I found it in the trunk last night when I was looking around

Image

looks like it might plug into this under the dash?

Thats the cruise control amp, and that plug is where it goes.

Well that explains why my cruise does not work! kinda hard when the brain is in the trunk! :)

Ever heard much feedback on the fattywagons single tank conversion?

Have you ever thought about adding injection line heaters on your Benz? I was reading about the fattywagons stuff and soulds like it cant hurt at all. But since you dont talk about them, I guess there is something you dont like about it or maybe they are just inflated hype?

No, and I don't call that a conversion either, its a bigger filter.

Yes but I didn't since they don't help at startup and the first 3 minutes which is the main issue with single tank. Mine runs great as is.
