FPHE size for Detroit Deisel 8V71

Postby bigtone23 » Sun Oct 23, 2011 12:31 pm

My band has a 1972 MCI MC-7 with the 8V71 (9.3L/318 HP) motor with a 29.5 gallon cooling system capacity. We have been running a heated 2 tank WVO system for nearly 4 years now. We are wanting to increase the oil temps a bit more before hitting the IP and will be insulating the WVO lines and adding a FPHE.

My question is what FPHE size is best for this engine? I assume I will need a larger one (20+ plate?) since this is a large engine with a hefty fuel flow (this 22 ton beast gets 7-8MPG).

What other specs should I be concerned with in regards to which heat exchanger I chose?

It will be mounted vertically (or however is best suited for the FPHE design) since finding room to mount it is not a problem in our huge, open engine compartment.
