Vehicles >=2007 use diesel particulate filters (DPF) to meet new tough emissions standards. They inject extra fuel after combustion to burn off deposits on the DPF. This extra fuel when biodiesel or VO gets past the rings and cause motor oil poly and serious problems. Some inject the extra fuel into the exhaust pipe (CAT) and this doesn't have this problem. Volkswagen tests using B5 and post-injection showed 45 percent oil dilution after 10,000 miles. This amount would be a disaster on V100, due to poly.

It would be useful to compile a list of vehicles that use this type of injection and DPF, so far the known problem ones are:
Ford Powerstroke
Dodge Cummins
VW
Mercedes
Nissan
Renault
Don't have the problem (post-inject into exhaust pipe):
CAT

Looks like trouble to me, and there have been many reported problems even running on D2. Such as the famous Ford recall flamethrower out the tailpipe, (they call a thermal event) video and fix info here:

| so is the cummins on the Slist or not because the fuel is injected into the exhaust pipe. I was working at Transwest and a new Cat equipped truck came in and needed two exhaust particulate filters. I believe they were $4,000 each. I think the fuel is injected into the exhaust. Seems like the particulate filters were a rushed emissions deal to keep diesels on the road. |

The dodge cummins has been confirmed to be on the problem list. The larger semi-rig Cummins and CATs often have an exhaust injector.
I agree the DPF were rushed and thats why there have been so many problems with them. Hopefully they get them working better somehow. _________________ YVORMV - Your veg. oil results may vary.

This is only a problem on the new 6.7l cummins. The last 5.9l does not have a dpf correct?
Very sad! My all time favorite motor is no longer a 5.9l and can't handle the veg. I thought diesels were supposed to be tough! I guess cummins still warranties it for 100,000 miles on diesel. |

All diesels sold starting 2007 have DPF by law. I don't know if they sold any 5.9s with a DPF.

I agree its sad. Someday someone will start making ways to hack the ECM software on these so that you have control of the DPF regens and can switch to diesel before every regen. Then they might work OK on VO, unless some other big issue pops up. _________________ YVORMV - Your veg. oil results may vary.

Here is more research studies on lube oil contamination with biodiesel:

A friend just bought a truck with the Cummins 5.9L manufactured in Canada in 07/2006.
Would this engine have a DPF, and what would we look for to confirm yes or no? |
