|
|
car: '98 VW TDI, 164,000 miles total, 84,000 on Elsbett single tank kit running 100% SVO and winter blends of 80%SVO/20%diesel.
I recently stripped a glow plug and had to remove the cylinder head to repair it. While it was off I inspected the combustion chamber. There were thin carbon deposits on about 50% of the surface of the pistons and head.
I hadn't seen inside any diesel engine ever, so I asked the opinions of two mechanics at My Garage in Naugatuck. One said it looked 'normal for it's mileage' and the other said it looked "in good condition, very good actually".
I fixed some wiring that came loose and a connection that got dirty and caused a short. Other than that, no problems with the kit or fuel related systems. Hopefully I can get another 84,000 miles out of it. |

That is fantastic!!! Is your VW engine direct injection or does it have a pre combustion chamber.
Is the pump rotary or in line.
Is the SVO you use, used oil or "virgin" oil?
Wishing you many more happy (S)miles. _________________ Living in Africa, Driving on the goodness of the Sun and the rain, and loving every Km of it!!

1. Direct Injection. All VW's in N.A. were DI since 1996.
2. Rotary. It's like the older IDI rotary, but with electronic control.
It's drive-by-wire.

3. I use all types. 50% used, and 50% of that was hydrogenated soy.
Currently use new soy when I run low in summer, or new canola in the winter.
Canola is reported to burn cleaner, Elsbett claims to hear of 'problems' with soy in DI's, but I certainly don't seem to have any problem.
Thanks for the karma. |

Update:
Hit 100K miles after about 6 years.
Car recently set a new top speed record of 105 mph / 168 kmph.
Best was 95 mph before. So I haven't lost any compression.
Still starts instantly.
